LIVING IN CAPE TOWN (2)

This week I realised that when the time to leave comes I will be a much stronger person than I am at the moment. Some of the women at the shelter have endured such horrific experiences beyond belief and I often find myself being part lawyer part counsellor, or even just a friend. I'm struggling to detach work from my personal emotions.

Despite often feeling drained I am grateful for the lessons I have already learnt and experiences that I have had whilst being here.  Living in Scotland most of my life had clouded my perception of what life is like in other countries beyond what is shown in the media.  Being here I am reminded that there is still much work to be done in the world.
The weather was so lovely this week and on Saturday my group of friends and I took a train to Simon's Town to see the penguins and later went surfing at Muizenberg beach. We rented surf boards and wet suits for 100 rand each, which is around £5 for over and hour and a half.  It was my first time surfing but luckily our friend Evan (who is from Hawaii!!) happens to be a pro surfer and showed us how it's done.

The next day we all woke up at 5am to hike Lion's Head mountain to watch the sunrise.  I found the hike very difficult, especially after having pulled almost every muscle in my body whilst surfing the previous day.  I did eventually make it to the top (with many breaks) just in time. The view was breathtaking as we were all just above a sea of clouds and I felt like an exhausted little fairy.

  3. Derek says hello and hopes you are going to find your Tarzan in that big Jungle. Keep away from the Cheetahs but he is absolutely sure you are going to need 2 weeks at least when you get back for a debriefing because of all the fun you are beginning to have. Now remember to have a beach bikini day and plenty of that cheap SA wine at £1 per bottle!! hah Ha!
